one side lies the monastery of Zographou, on the other Docheiariou.
The monastery of Kastamonitou occupies
the twentieth place in the Athonite hierarchy.
The chapel of Our Lady has an elegant
and unusual iconostasis on which hangs the miracle-working icon of the
Virgin Portaitissa(of the gate).
Kastamonitou has three
miracle-working icons to be seen in the katholikon. One depicts the first
martyr St Stephen, and probably dates to the 8th century, and are two
icons of the Virgin, one of Our Lady Hodegetria(12th century) , the other
of Virgin Antiphonetria(she who retorts).
